Foray to Massachusetts #7: J.P. Licks

Boston is a city known for its ice cream. It has a lot of ice cream shops that could arguably be called the best in the city: Emack & Bolio's, Lizzy's, and Toscanini's, to list only a few examples.

For what it's worth, my vote is for J. P. Licks. I have mentioned J. P. Licks before, in my Downtown Boston Chocolate Walking Tour, and I'm sure I will mention J. P. Licks again. It's hard to say enough good things about them.

For starters, check out these flavors:

And the flavors change every month, too! My go-to choices are the mint Oreo, the Oreo cake batter, and the brownie brownie batter. But usually there are so many good monthly flavors that I don't even have room in my cup for the old standbys.

This time around I went with a scoop of the ginger snap molasses and a scoop of the extreme chocolate.

Both flavors were excellent. And that's what really sets J. P. Licks apart: it's not just that their flavor concepts sound good. It's that the execution lives up to the descriptions.

BOTTOM LINE: My top contender for best ice cream in Boston.

  1. I can't believe you recommended ice creams with vanilla bases, Leila. I feel like this shows how much your tastes have expanded since the HS days. Also, I agree with your assessment - J.P. Licks goes ALL OUT with their flavors (ie, they always have strong flavors of what their names suggest they will have, the antithesis of which is a pet peeve of mine).

  2. As a Boston area resident and ice cream lover, I've got to give J.P. Licks the nod for locally produced & sold ice cream, although I'll take a pint of certain Ben & Jerry's and Graeter's flavors over any local parlor. (Unfortunately, the Boston area's best ice cream parlor, Harrell's, closed a few years ago. They had the richest base with the best mouth feel I've ever had). Christina's in Cambridge's Inman Square is notable for their flavor ingredients, although their base isn't as creamy as you'd expect from super premium ice cream.

    1. I am definitely a Christina's fan, too-- next time I'm in Boston I want to make a point of going there so I can review them. It's just so hard to make it to all the good ice cream parlors in Boston. (I know, I know... poor me...)
