Foray to Massachusetts #4: Tres Gatos

I have had a soft spot for churros and chocolate ever since the summer I was 16, when my best friend, Allie, and I went to Spain and ate churros and chocolate roughly every single night around 3am. It is hard not to have a soft spot for churros and chocolate: they are a fried thing dipped in thick liquid chocolate. What's not to love?

I have found that it's impossible for any churros anywhere in America to live up to my memories of the churros in Burgos, Spain. But these Tres Gatos churros did a very good job.

This dipping chocolate was killer: thick and warm. When I got too full to eat any more of the churros, I just scraped up the rest of the chocolate with my spoon. Plus Tres Gatos is really cute and cozy and had other tasty (non-chocolate) stuff on their menu. I recommend it here.

BOTTOM LINE: An excellent choice for churros in Boston.

  1. I know you are not planning a trip to NC any time soon, but just FYI there is also a cute place with churros and chocolate here (but still as you point out moderately inferior to those found in Spain).

  2. As a sidenote, have you found in NYC anything resembling "chocolate" aka the "hot chocolate" that you eat with a spoon out of a mug that I also spent pretty much every single second imbibing while I was in Spain? THAT would be an excellent find for this blog.

  3. No. I really really wish I could find such a thing. No one does drinking chocolate quite like Spain.

  4. I will be in Chapel Hill on 12/20, for one day. Is yr place in Chapel Hill by any chance? Also, I don't know what Spain has, but there are places that use just melted chocolate for hot chocolate, like Grom. Tcho does the same thing in SF.

  5. Spain is legit a country. It is a nation-state.

  6. David - it is Watts Grocery (in Durham) but I think their churros in chocolate sauce are reserved for weekends. That said, Southern Season (a store in Chapel Hill) had great chocolate bars last time I was there (but DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE OLIVE OIL CHOCOLATE BARS THEY TASTE LIKE GARBAGE). What brings you to the area? In the meantime I am going to brainstorm more chocolate related things to do in the area.

  7. I will check it out! Going for a show -- http://www.local506.com/event/171295/ -- wanna join? In other related news, I just had some amazing spanish chocolate and churros in Berlin. More to come on that later. (Spoilers)

  8. I think Chocolate NYC should definitely weigh in on the great "which chocolate is better? Swiss or German?" debate - I personally am in the Switzerland camp, but I've heard many compelling arguments for the German side as well. Obviously that is the antithesis of "local" so it might not be totally your style. As for the concert - I am not SURE I can go (because a draft of my dissertation is due the 22nd) but I probably will need to eat at some point - maybe you should just tell me your exact schedule? Sincerely, your most demanding blog commenter

  9. The Swiss chocolate most people eat is from the German side of the country, so I never really thought of that as the big versus. But I don't think it's all that controversial that France has the best chocolate nowadays, easily beating Belgium, which easily beats Switzerland. In fact, the reason Switzerland has sunk so far is that I feel like a lot of the prominent Swiss chocolatiers have been bought out by big German companies. I never thought of Germany as even in the running, and I would probably put another two or three countries in front of them. US might crack the top 3 now, on the strength of NYC and SF, given how far Switzerland has sunk.

(Note: I just did a pretty serious chocolate exploration of SF and Zurich, and I think SF has the edge. Currently in Paris, and it clearly blows every other city out of the water.)

You should probably prioritize this show over your dissertation. I'm just saying, I'm traveling for two reasons: chocolate and this band. It's that important. But in any case, I will keep you posted as to our ETA in the region (coming from Atlanta)

    1. I just came from a pretty serious chocolate exploration of Zurich too - I was pleased but did not compare it adequately to Paris - I was too obsessed with Macarons there (I guess I am not a chocolate purist WHICH IS WHY I AM NOT WRITING A CHOCOLATE BLOG BUT MERELY COMMENTING OBSESSIVELY)

  10. I definitely did not get enough macarons in Zurich, but I did do a nice taste test in Paris... :)
