Equal Exchange

In the lead-up to our chocolate party, we had a lovely sit-down meeting at the Chocolate Room with a representative from Equal Exchange.  We learned all sorts of things -- apparently they are completely worker-owned, so every employee is a part owner (a true co-op), and they were among the Fair Trade Chocolate pioneers in the US!  But let's be real here: the important questions is whether it is delicious.

And the important answer is yes.

Here is what David sampled:

There was an 80% (Panama-origin), a 71% blend, a 65% (Ecuador-origin), and a 55% with almonds.  They were all really good, honestly.

The 55% with almonds compared nicely with the Chocolove.  It did not have sea salt, which made it taste a little more mature and a little less addictive.  For better or worse.

David's favorite -- perhaps unsurprisingly -- was the 80% Panama, and we were very glad to have that at our Party.  We compared it with the Chocolate Room's new, proprietary 80% bar (Ecuador-origin), and the Equal Exchange bar was far better.  It was chocolatier, less fruity, and didn't have some of the weird flavor notes.  The Chocolate Room bar also had a somewhat unsatisfying finish, whereas the Equal Exchange kept its rich flavor throughout.

Leila also sampled the 55% semi-sweet chocolate chips but was not very impressed, maybe because they're only 55%. Fortunately Equal Exchange also offers a bittersweet 70% chocolate chip bag, which may be more her (ahem) bag. The 55% are probably delicious in cookies, just not so great for directly pouring down your throat.

Interestingly, several weeks earlier, I (David) had returned home from a long day (or two) of work, and a friend had left a series of coded notes, leading me on a scavenger hunt around my (one bedroom) apartment.  The reward?  Mini-tablets of 55% Equal Exchange!

We lead charmed lives, you guys.

Bottom Line: Equal Exchange is a great company, with great people and great chocolate.  They're gonna do great.

Chocolate Party!!

As many of you know, our first birthday party was last week.  It looked like this:

We had nine tasting tables set up, including percentages:

origins:

mint, milk:

baking supplies:

local chocolates:

chocolate-covered products:

bars with stuff-in-them:

and truffles and bonbons:

 There was even a raffle!:

People stocked up pretty nicely:

And subsequently made themselves a little sick, chocolate-drunk, or both.

Looking at the surveys, some of the most popular items were the Zoe barks and bonbons, the Li-Lac marzipan acorns and hazelnut truffles, all the Kopali chocolate-covered items, the Christopher Elbow Honey Spice bonbon (bought at 2Beans), the Beschle 88% dark chocolate bar (bought at 2Beans), the Fine & Raw Truffle Chunky bar, and the Equal Exchange Lemon Ginger Black Pepper bar.

The most controversial items (lots of lovers and skeptics), somewhat unsurprisingly, were the Pacari Raw 100% chocolate bar and the Al Nassma Camel's Milk bar (bought at 2Beans).

Alyssa Tanchajja took all these amazing photos for us, including this one of a great friend of the blog sampling the fan-favorite Li-Lac marzipan acorns:

We had a great time, and we hope you did too!

Thanks so much to our sponsors!

Bottom Line: Stick with us.

Storm Rations B1: Equal Exchange 67% Mint Chocolate

So I was stuck in DC.  I had nine (9) bus tickets canceled by three (3) different bus companies.  But it was almost halloween, and we all know there is no more sincere pumpkin patch to spend the holiday than back home in NYC.  I somehow convinced my vegan friend Mick to drive me home.  To do this, he needed to drive down from Baltimore and then drive me all the way up, through a natural disaster and a half.  There were some conditions to his doing this, but my favorite condition was that the car be stocked with vegan-friendly chocolate.  Whole Foods' being opened made this easy.

the generic layout seems to indicate that they abuse child laborers, but the wording and naming plead, "we would never hurt our child laborers"
An unassuming package
The first bar we attacked was by Equal Exchange.  Honestly, it was phenomenal.  Excellent dark chocolate with crushed up peppermint sticks.  It had a more pleasing crunch than those Krispy Herhseys Minis that everyone loves, plus it was gourmet chocolate, plus mint.

sometimes you just want to eat chocolate, not a work of art.
And an unassuming bar
I would probably continue raving about this into my old age if I had not just had Patric's version mere days earlier (those his does not use peppermint).  While I might give an edge to Patric in terms of taste, the Equal Exchange bar was less than half the price, and it had that great texture.

Bottom Line:  If you like chocolate and peppermint and you have not yet eaten this, what have you been doing with your life?
